The question “Can I replace valve seals myself?” is one I hear regularly from building managers, maintenance techs, and DIYers with a few more teeth. The answer though is not a simple yes or no. It’s very much a “depends on the type of valve you have, how complicated the design is, and how handy you are.” Differentiating between the various valve constructions is important prior to disassembly. Here is how the seal replacement challenge ranks for the typical butterfly and Ball Valve designs.

For these more simple designs like the Soft Seat Grooved End Butterfly Valve with Lever Operator you can do your own seal replacement if you’re a competent DIYer. These valves are made for comparatively simple installation and maintenance in pipework systems without welding or threading. If you can remove the lever operator and the grooved couplings, you may be able to replace the soft seat, yet the valve body will need to be exposed to do so, you may not need special tools but you might for taking off the seat as well.

On the other hand, removing a Cast Iron Lug Butterfly Valve​ or a Double Flanged Butterfly Valve​ (also known as Butterfly Valve Double Flange) is a bigger challenge. They are high-capacity valves for full closure between two flanges in a pipeline. Now, replacing the seat or shaft seals from inside usually also involves the whole valve being taken out of the line, which can be a lot of work.
