Durable Butterfly Valves: Bronze, Ceramic and Stainless Steel Discs

2026-09-23

For corrosive water, abrasive media and frequent operation, disc material has a direct effect on butterfly valve service life. Aluminium bronze, ceramic and stainless steel are commonly used for demanding applications, but the right choice depends on the medium, temperature, pressure, corrosion level and operating frequency.

Why Is It Called a Butterfly Valve?

A butterfly valve uses a round disc mounted on a shaft. The disc rotates 90 degrees to open or close the pipeline. When open, the disc is almost parallel to the flow; when closed, it turns across the pipe and seals against the seat.

The quarter-turn design keeps butterfly valves compact and relatively light, especially in large sizes. They are widely used in water treatment, HVAC, fire protection, marine and industrial piping. Larger valves can be fitted with a gearbox or actuator when higher operating torque is required.

Butterfly Valve Direction of Flow

Many resilient-seated butterfly valves are suitable for bidirectional service, but some designs have a preferred Butterfly Valve Direction of Flow.

Shaft position, disc profile and seat construction affect sealing and operating torque. For high-pressure, abrasive or directional designs, the flow arrow on the valve body should be followed during installation.

When ordering, buyers should confirm whether the valve is fully bidirectional or has a specified flow direction.

Choosing the Right Disc Material

Aluminium Bronze Disc

An Aluminum bronze disc butterfly valve is commonly used for seawater, brackish water and marine service.

Aluminium bronze offers good resistance to seawater corrosion and can perform well where erosion or cavitation is a concern. Typical applications include seawater cooling, marine piping and ballast-water systems.

The disc is only one part of the valve. For seawater service, the shaft, seat, body and other wetted components should also be suitable for the medium.

Ceramic Disc

Lug Type Ceramic Butterfly Valves are mainly selected for abrasive or aggressive service.

Ceramic surfaces provide high hardness and good resistance to wear from slurry, mineral particles, fly ash and abrasive wastewater. They can also offer good chemical resistance in many applications.

Mining, mineral processing, ash handling and abrasive wastewater are typical applications. Before selection, check the ceramic grade, operating temperature, particle size and solids concentration.

Stainless Steel Disc

Stainless steel discs such as CF8M/316 are widely used for potable water, treated water, food processing, HVAC and general industrial service.

They provide a practical balance between corrosion resistance and cost. For high-chloride or more aggressive environments, duplex stainless steel may be considered.

Butterfly Valve with Gear Operator

On larger valves, a hand lever may not provide enough operating torque. A Butterfly Valve With Gear Operator uses a worm gearbox to make manual operation easier.

Gear operators are commonly used on larger valves, although the actual requirement depends on valve size, pressure differential, seat material and operating torque. Position indicators, locking devices, chain wheels and electric actuators can also be added.

Butterfly Valve for Water Treatment

A Butterfly Valve For Water Treatment should be selected according to the actual water quality and pipeline conditions. Raw water, filtered water, chlorinated water, wastewater and sludge may require different materials.

EPDM is widely used for many water applications, while NBR and other elastomers may be selected for specific media.

When requesting a quotation, provide:

  • Valve size and pressure rating
  • Body and disc material
  • Seat material
  • Connection standard
  • Working temperature
  • Medium and chloride level
  • Operating frequency
  • Manual, gearbox, pneumatic or electric operation
  • Required testing and certification

For automated plants, electric or pneumatic actuators can be integrated with the control system or SCADA.

Dual Plate Wafer Check Valve

A butterfly valve is mainly used for isolation and, depending on its design, flow control. It is not a substitute for a check valve where backflow prevention is required.

A Dual Plate Wafer Type Check Valve is commonly installed downstream of pumps. Its spring-loaded plates close as forward flow decreases, helping reduce reverse flow and water hammer. The compact wafer design allows installation between standard pipe flanges.

Buying from a Butterfly Valve Flange Type Factory

Working directly with a Butterfly Valve Flange Type Factory can be useful when a project requires specific materials, dimensions or actuation.

Depending on the manufacturer, buyers can specify wafer, lug, double-flange or grooved connections together with different body, disc, shaft and seat materials.

Export documentation may include EN 10204 material certificates, hydrostatic testing and seat leakage testing according to applicable standards such as API 598 or EN 12266.

For an accurate quotation, send the manufacturer the valve size, pressure class, connection standard, medium, temperature, disc and seat materials, operating method and required certifications.

For corrosive or abrasive service, the disc should not be selected separately. The body, shaft, seat and coating must all be compatible with the actual operating conditions.
