How to Prevent Seat Leakage in High-Pressure Potable Water Butterfly Valves
Seat leakage is a common concern in high-pressure potable water systems, especially on pump discharge lines, municipal water pipelines and high-rise water systems. A butterfly valve may work well under normal pressure but start leaking when exposed to water hammer, excessive closing torque, pipeline debris or unsuitable water chemistry.
Reliable sealing depends on selecting the correct valve construction for the actual working conditions. Seat material, pressure rating, valve size, connection, actuator and potable-water certification should all be considered before ordering.

Common Causes of Seat Leakage
Pressure surges caused by pump start-up, sudden shutdown or rapid valve operation can temporarily increase pipeline pressure. If the valve is incorrectly rated, the soft seat may deform or lose its sealing position.
Sand, welding slag, rust and scale can also become trapped between the disc and seat. These particles may damage the sealing surface during repeated operation.
Water chemistry is another important factor. Chlorine, chloramine and high-temperature disinfection can affect unsuitable elastomers. For drinking-water service, the seat or liner should be selected according to the actual water temperature and chemical conditions.
Incorrect installation can also lead to leakage. Pipe misalignment, excessive flange stress and uneven bolt tightening may affect the valve body and seat.
Select the Correct Seat and Valve Design
For potable-water applications, buyers may require WRAS, NSF/ANSI 61, KTW or other local approvals, depending on the project and destination market.
EPDM is widely used for drinking water because of its resistance to water and many common disinfectants. NBR may be considered where oil resistance is required, subject to the required potable-water approval.
For more aggressive chemical conditions, PTFE and ECTFE (Halar) liners can provide higher chemical resistance.
A Pinless PTFE Lined Butterfly Valve removes the traditional through-disc pin and provides a cleaner internal design. A Halar Lined Pinless Butterfly Valve may be suitable for applications involving stronger chemical exposure. For conventional water systems, a Rubber Lined Pinless Butterfly Valve provides resilient sealing for shut-off service.

Choose the Correct Pressure and Connection
The valve body, disc, shaft, seat and connection must all match the working pressure.
A Ductile Iron Flange Type Butterfly Valve made from ASTM A536 ductile iron is widely used in water pipelines. A Double Flanged Butterfly Valve provides a rigid connection for larger municipal and industrial pipelines.
For compact installations, a lug or wafer design may be suitable. Grooved butterfly valves are commonly used where fast installation is required, including pump rooms, mechanical rooms and fire-protection systems.
